Pelvic Floor Professional Education

Since 1990, both nationally and internationally, Kathe has trained professionals interested in evaluation and treatment of the lumbopelvic girdle and pelvic floor musculature issues. While remaining focused on the pelvis and pelvic floor rehabilitation, Kathe utilizes a whole body, holistic approach to evaluation and treatment. Her teaching addresses both women and men with significant urogynecological, postpartum, colorectal and pelvic musculoskeletal issues guiding professionals on evidence-based techniques to reduce or eliminate pain, improve overall function and teach self-care strategies.

Pelvic Floor Support Systems in Post-Partum Recovery, Pelvic Pain and Prolapse

This Boost Camp is designed as a one-day intensive continuing education seminar for experienced physical therapists treating pelvic floor dysfunctions. Patient/client management teaching will include identifying pelvic floor muscle diagnoses, as well as advanced examination techniques of female fascia, organ and pelvic floor anatomy applicable to postpartum women, pelvic pain and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). A plan of care will be implemented using the examination findings. Patient education and individualized functional treatment progressions will be emphasized.

The morning labs will include internal vaginal and rectal examination techniques to identify normal and abnormal anterior, posterior and apical pelvic support, including vaginal fascial mapping and assessment for perineocele, levator ani (LA) avulsion and measurement of external perineal landmarks (gh, pb) used for pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q). Participants will learn appropriate examination instruction and the difference of summarizing findings for the patient and for the practitioner’s own medical records.

Afternoon lab time will focus on musculoskeletal and functional evaluation and treatment. Participants will learn management of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) with attention to postures and the glottis, breathing and pelvic diaphragms. We will review the current research on the evidence-based benefits of lifestyle intervention verses pelvic floor exercise that will help practitioners formulate a comprehensive rehab approach that empowers a woman to be active.

The course registration fee includes a pre-course home study module and an extensive literature review of scientific articles supporting the concepts taught in the seminar. Review of this information (6-8+ hours) is required and will allow time in the seminar to focus on guided examination and treatment techniques practicums.

Upon completion of the seminar the participant will be able to:

  1. Name three locations of vaginal pelvic fascia support and genital hiatus support structures which could cause symptoms of pelvic pain.
  2. List three modifiable conditions that could affect results of vaginal fascial examination.
  3. Palpate and identify with internal vaginal examination levator ani avulsion, the ATLA, ATFP, ATRV fascial integrity, uterosacral ligament and cervix locations C and D.
  4. Demonstrate POP examinations both internal vaginal and external POP-Q measurements (gh, pb) using appropriate instructions and supplies.
  5. Describe two common POP-Q measurements and digital examination findings in patients with postpartum levator ani avulsion and POP.
  6. Describe symptom presentations in 6 types of POP as they relate to fascial support.
  7. Review current evidence-based literature summaries on IAP, Breathing and PFD.
  8. List three key abdominal wall and breathing assessments for patients with PFD.
  9. Assess and demonstrate IAP management strategies in conjunction with therapeutic exercise and functional activity programs for PFD.

The study module has independent objectives that are applied to CEU credit in CA.

It is clear to me that Kathe’s ability as a teacher comes from her experience, caring, willingness to listen and desire to learn from her patients. She creates an environment that is a perfect balance of focus and fun.

My advice, take a course from her earlier in your career rather than later!

Testimonials

This course is highly engaging for an advanced pelvic floor therapist. The course manual is worth it weight in gold—an amazing clinical resource with plenty of reading to keep me busy for the rest of the year.

Erica Nixon Mack

PT, PRCP

I was surprised by how much knowledge I gained from this course even after working as a pelvic PT for 9+ years. I was able to have a whole new understanding of the fascial tissue, pelvic organ prolapst and techniques I could apply to my pelvic pain patients that I felt like I should have know before!

Kristen Anderson

PT, DPT, OCS, CLT

Kathe delivers some serious knowledge bombs in her Boost Camp course! Having worked many years as a Pelvic PT and treating women with prolapse, I was amazed at how much Kathe could still teach me. Her understanding of anatomy is exquisite. This class should not be missed by anyone treating pelvic conditions!

Shannon Forrestall

MSPT, PRPC

Kathe’s considerations about lifestyle interventions and prolapse go far beyond the specific teachings of prolapse exam and exercise. She incorporates the brain connection into the learning process. Kathe brings in strategies of functional tasks with breath and appropriate muscle activation to help the prolapse patient maintain change and self-awareness.

Gail Wetzler
